Grace So GloriousPayton Flener
I realize in advance that this is most likely the opposite of what the world will tell you, and I’m good with that. I’m not here to be like the world, and neither are you.
I’ll just jump right in. “The hustle” and “self care”-They tend to be opposite ideas of one another – hustling requires relentless hard work and self care encourages rest from the hustle, but it’s not always in a biblical light. I believe these two ideas mostly encourage us to rely on our own strength and act on our flesh.
Yes, work hard. But do so to please the Lord, not man. You will never be able to satisfy the demands of your workplace, your business, your family, or ministry and that is okay because let’s face it. We can’t do it all. I’m not implying to act on laziness or to purposely conflict with your boss or co workers or family members. I want to remind you that although you work hard for man, you’re to also work hard for God, which is what counts. Colossians 3:23 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”. The world may never be content with your efforts but the Lord, my friend, will be pleased. Hustling is quite alright if you’re working for what glorifies Him. But don’t forget to rest… my next point. 😊
Self care. This is a very popular topic going around right now, and I’ll save my soap box for another day, but today- I just want you to know that you do deserve rest. You really do work so hard, so you need it. Make time for it. Go to the spa. Get a massage. Take a nap. But please, please let your exhaustion draw you near to Jesus. Don’t rely on yourself to take care of yourself. I love the way the Message translation says it “Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders; He’ll carry your load”. (Psalm 55:22) There is also an insinuation that self care will help your confidence, and I’m not knocking that. But your ultimate confidence comes from Christ. If self care is the answer, why are some of the same people who promote it battling depression? Why are so many of us still struggling? You can do all the self care things you want, but if you don’t have Jesus you will NEVER rest. You’ll never be truly confident. I know that on my own, my ability to rest is almost non-existent, and my confidence is a roller coaster ride. I don’t know about you but I’d rather dwell in the arms of Jesus and let him take care of it. My confidence in Him is so much more than I could ever need.
You may wonder.. “ok, great, so what does any of this have to do with ‘grace so glorious’”? The only reason we are even here is by His grace. It’s is ONLY by God’s glorious grace that we have the gifts and talents to work. It is ONLY by God’s glorious grace that he allows us to rest and provides different means to do so. Thank the Lord today for his gifts to you, and surrender both your work and rest to Him. His grace will see you through.
